What we did! CASE STUDY 2

Allergy Friendly, Yeadon

The client came to me to see if I could make a more allergy friendly garden.

AllergyUK.org advises that "grass pollen is the most common trigger in the summer months, in lawns and meadows". The design paved the way to creating a low allergen garden.

Before

This client invited me to look at their outdoor space (248m²). The garden was divided into different areas with a glasshouse and shed to the left hand side, and trellis used as a divider making the space feel much smaller than it was. A beer garden style table and a concrete patio filled the space. There was also a small stretch of lawn that the mower would deal with in less time that it would take to get it out and put it away again.

What was missing...?

- Allergy free use of the garden, as much as is possible

- Spacious patio for socialising

- Minimum gardening as we have very busy lives

- A pond

- Upcycled materials wherever possible

The Design.

A low maintenance garden was designed based around hexagonal shapes to add interest in the patio area. The lawn and concrete flags were removed, and the existing old bath was reused as the base for the garden pond.

Timber decking continued the flow between the home and the garden, and this was surrounded by a timber balustrade to define a dining area with the lower section being an entertaining space. Teak garden furniture complimented the scheme with sun loungers and further seating.

After

The Garden Power.

The part of our garden that brings us the most joy is the seating and dining area - for those Al fresco get

togethers!

For us it’s easier to maintain - no grass to mow. And with a pollen allergy this means we can be out in the

garden much more in the Summer.
