This is an example of an easy care garden, with the aim being to keep it simple.
This client felt that their front garden was just too
difficult to handle and looked messy. Everything
could go, especially the grass with its need to be
mown. Two features were to remain: the wall in front
of the door and the central focal point which were
two gorgeous red and gold Acers (maples).

Before

What was missing...?
- Enjoyment in the garden
- No grass and manageable colourful plants
- Eye catching with a sense of flair
- Easy to maintain
- New level and even steps up to the front door with
access rails
The Design
The design centred on two interlocking circles (a
full circle and a semi-circle) with different textures
achieved using a combination of Indian sandstone
and gravel. The main circle was created using Indian
sandstone with a large decorative pot in the centre
to soften the overall feel of this Courtyard garden.
The adjacent semi-circle was constructed using golden gravel which complemented the sleepers of the raised beds that supported easier maintenance. Impressive and eye catching architectural plants were placed around the interlocking circles and alpines were added that tumbled over the edge of the raised beds to soften the overall feel of the garden. The planting that brought colour and structure resulted in the need for a little more than bi-annual maintenance but much less than the previously six weekly basis. The driveway was also widened to improve accessibility and surrounded by fragrant plants to be enjoyed on arrival home.

A pleasure to look at from the inside of the house and
for people passing by too. ‘What you have done with
the garden is amazing, I can’t stop looking at it’.
